IWSG May: Time to breathe

Good morning! Apologies for this post being a day late - I have no idea what happened yesterday, I did remember it was time for an IWSG post, but then I forgot to post it!!

The Insecure Writer's Support Group was set up by Alex J. Cavanaugh - it's a safe place for all writers to post their insecurities, no matter how big or small, on the first Wednesday of every month.

I'm going to keep this post short and sweet - to be honest, I don't have many insecurities this month, as I haven't had the time to write! But that's what I'm aiming to work on this month - I'd like to get the outline for Synthetica 2 (not it's real title, honest) done and dusted, so I can revise it and then start the first draft over summer. Exciting!

I've noticed over social media for the past few days that a lot of people I follow have been finishing off WIPs, starting new projects, and seeming to write a whole book in a very very short space of time. It's a bit discouraging tbh, but then again, everyone works differently I guess.

I've decided to try and channel these negative thoughts into something positive - it's inspired me to keep going with my own writing and not to give up. I've got a couple of other novel ideas in the pipeline, so I'm currently toying with the idea of trying to get those outlines done too - if the professionals can write several projects at once, I can too, right?? I'd really like to knuckle down and getting serious about writing, and start all those other stories that are floating around my brain...but then again, maybe that'll be too much pressure...we'll have to wait and see!

How about you? Can you work on several projects at once? Do you find it makes you more productive, or not?

Hope you're all having a lovely Thursday, and if you're in the UK like me, don't forget to vote :)!

Happy Thursday, everyone!

  1. I definitely stick to one project at a time, but if you can work on more than one at a time that is awesome. You are right, every writer is different and you should go with what works for you. I'm happy that you have so many ideas for projects. I'm a little jealous. Wishing you the best with your writing.

    1. Thank you Murees :)! I'll give it a whirl and see what happens - if I can't do it, I'll just go back to writing one book/outline at once :)

  2. Ha! I've forgotten to post IWSG before and had to rush to get one posted. It happens. Better late than never.

And I usually have two or three projects I work on at the same time. I have no problem doing this.

    1. I know I have to post every month, and yet, every month it seems to sneak up on me! That's encouraging to hear, I'm definitely going to give it a try. Thanks for stopping by!

  3. I'm lucky to have one idea at a time.
We each go at our own pace. Not everyone is cranking out a book in a month. Certainly not last month with the Challenge going on!

    1. Thanks Alex :)! Sometimes it just feels like everyone else is leaving you behind, which I know deep down isn't true, but I can't help it. Haha you're definitely right about the challenge!

  4. Sometimes I just have to stay off Twitter because I get so depressed, comparing myself to others!

    1. Yes! Me too, Stephanie! I'm considering going on a short social media break - it's just a bit too much sometimes.

  5. I read somewhere once, that one of my favorite authors wrote an average of like 3,000 words per day and I was all... O_O Talk about nanowrimo champion. HA! But seriously, I was a little depressed afterwards. This particular author--Brandon Sanderson, if you're wondering--is also notorious for cranking out like ten projects at the same time...*sigh*... I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I'll never be a bonafide writing genius like him! Haha! But that's okay, because he'll never write the stories I write either, right? We just gotta celebrate our own victories and not compare ourselves to others! (Easier said than done. I KNOW! But it's so much less stressful when we do!)

    1. Wow! The only time I've ever managed to do anything like that is when I had to write my first draft in the space of two weeks...otherwise, I'm lucky to get 1000 words a day! I love that idea that someone else will never write the stories you write - it's very inspiring :). Yes! We should definitely be celebrating our own achievements more often :). Thanks for stopping by, Julie :)!

  6. I'm not the fastest writer either and am often in awe of those who seem to have huge daily word counts. We all work differently and I don't think there is necessary a right or wrong way to do things. Sometimes it is down to the time we have available to write too. I generally prefer to concentrate on one project at a time although I do sometimes work on edits alongside new work.

    1. Thanks for the encouragement, Suzanne! You're right, we do all work differently - I just need to remember this more often :)

  7. I have also noticed how fast other writers finish their books and I'm always flabbergasted. I'm not a fast writer. I tend to edit as I go, which they say is a no-no, but maybe that means I edit less than those fast writers? I like to thinks so. ;)

    1. It's crazy isn't it?! Sometimes I wonder if they have some kind of superpower than allows them to write so quickly (or maybe they don't have a day job, because writing IS their day job). Haha definitely! I tend to write a first draft, then edit/rewrite at the same time, which I hope is why I'm not a fast writer either!

  9. I take months after I've finished a book to start another - my head is usually still caught up in the previous one. I'm a slow writer, I know no other way to do it. And I try not to be envious of writers who always seem to be releasing new books.

    1. Everyone is different :), I think I'm more like you! I try not to let it get to me, but it's hard on those days when you're doubting yourself as a writer and everyone else seems to be flying past you. I'll try not to be so envious in future!

  10. I can and do work on multiple projects at a time. I won't suggest it if they're in the same genre or otherwise related, though. :-)
