Synthetica Blog Tour: Final Day!

Hey guys!

Well, it's finally here - it's the final day of the Synthetica blog tour! These past two weeks have gone so fast! I'd just like to give everyone who's taken part a HUGE thank you! Whether you've had me on your blog, retweeted on Twitter or commented on my blog posts, all your encouragement has meant the the world to me - so thank you :).

I don't have a riveting final post for you, because I'm still a bit zoned out from the anaesthetic I had yesterday (on the one hand, this is awesome because I'm ssooo relaxed and chilled for once...but on the other hand I keep misreading texts and not processing what anyone is saying to me...whoops). So instead, today I'm just going to highlight the blogs that I'm featured on, and I'm going to try and write a few special posts for you for next week instead :).

In case you're wondering, these two pictures pretty much sum up my state of mind for the past two days:

Anyway! Today, I'm over at Random Redheaded Ramblings, Samantha Writes and Paperback Princess. Also, the lovely Danielle Shipley has a fantastic Kiss & Tell interview with my character Anais Finch over on her blog today - make sure you check it out! Will Scarlett is just hilarious.

So that's all from me for now - hopefully I'll be back and a bit more with it next week :). Have a lovely weekend, everyone!

Don't forget, Synthetica is available from:
Amazon | iBooks | Nook | Kobo | Smashwords | Goodreads

Synthetica Blog Tour Day 9

Morning everyone!

Today is the penultimate day of the Synthetica blog tour! Normally I'd have something super exciting planned (i.e. yet MORE posts about Synthetica...you know you love it), but I'm just about to head off to the hospital to get my ear sorted. I'll see if I can post anything up later, depending on how I feel when I come round from the anaesthetic.

I'm over at Just US Book Blog and Le&ndra Wallace today, so make sure you check them out! Also, in case you missed it, here are the other blogs I've been at over the past few days:

Worth Reading It?  -  http://www.worthreadingit.blogspot.com
Books and Ashes  -  http://booksandashes.wordpress.com
The Page Unbound  -  http://thepageunbound.com
Writing Pearls  - http://www.writingpearls.com

Hopefully I'll speak to you all a bit more later and have something a bit more exciting for you to get your teeth into, but if not, see you guys tomorrow!

Have a great Thursday!

Synthetica book tour - Character Spotlight: Dalla

Morning all!

Today is Day 3 of the Synthetica blog tour: I'm over at The Phantom Paragrapher and Travel with Books and Coffee - thanks for having me!

Continuing with the theme of spotlighting all of Synthetica's main characters during the blog tour, today on my blog we're going to be getting more of an in-depth look at Dalla Goddard, Anais' best friend and a girl with a heart of gold.

This is how I imagine Dalla - minus all the weird flowers in her hair...

Name: Dalla Goddard
Age: 17
Lives: Imperial City
Occupation: Intern at Civitas

Quickfire Interview:

What are you up to right now?
I'm just chillin' at home, listening to music on my RetCom and messaging my BBF, Anais. Oh, and talking to you, obviously!

Favourite place?
I love my bedroom! In fact, my whole flat is pretty awesome. And I love going to the park at sunset. It's my favourite time of day.

Favourite meal?
Street noodles! There's this awesome place down by the market that does the best noodles - they're my favourite snack, especially after a night out!

Favourite subject at school?
Programming! Closely followed by Computer Coding. And Advanced Maths was always pretty fun too. Don't you just love subjects that make sense?? Like, there's only ever really one answer - I just love logical things like that.

Night in or night out?
Night out!

Ice cream or chocolate?
Oh gosh that's a hard one...chocolate, probably.

Tea or coffee?
Herbal tea for me!

Flora or Fauna?
Flora!

Ideal career?
Program Developer at Civitas! How cool would it be to actually create new technology? Like, you actually take a brand new idea and turn it into something real. That would be amazing!

Three things you couldn't live without:
Just three?? That's harsh. Hmm I guess I'd have to say my RetCom, chocolate and my BFF. Anais is such a doll!

What's your ultimate dream?
I'd love to travel the world one day. Sipping cocktails on an exotic beach while watching the sun going down - sounds like my idea of heaven!

I hope you all enjoyed finding out a little bit more about Dalla. She was one of my favourite characters to write - she's such a bubbly, friendly person that I just had a blast writing her scenes - no wonder Anais loves having her as her best friend!

If you'd like to find out more about Dalla's world, you can view a description of Synthetica on my blog. You can also download Synthetica from:

Amazon
Smashwords
Kobo

We'll be taking a short break from the world of Synthetica tomorrow, but I will be posting up my latest Movie Madness review, so stay tuned!

P.S. If anyone can draw/knows anyone who can draw anime, please let me know! I hate trawling the internet for drawings - I'd love to have my own originals :)

Synthetica book tour - Character Interview: Skye

Welcome to day 2 of the Synthetica blog tour! Today, I'm over at Donnie Darko Girl, Mythical Books and Nerdychampagne. Thanks for having me!

Today on my blog, I'm featuring one of the main characters in Synthetica: Skye Belaforte, Head of PR and one of the Directors for Civitas, the company at the centre of all the turmoil in Synthetica.

To mix it up a bit, I thought I'd interview Skye for you, instead of doing a straight forward character profile. Let's go!

Hi Skye! First of all, great hair. What made you choose sky blue? Was it because of your name haha?
Skye: [rolls eyes] How quaint. My name's Skye, so I must've chosen to have sky blue hair to match. Do you really think you're the first person to ask me that?

Um...no?
Of course not. And for your information, this is my natural hair colour. I pride myself on my appearance, but I don't feel the need to mess with my genetics. I'll stick with fashion over features, thank you very much. [smoothes down impeccably crisp shirt]

Right...so what made you decide to get into Public Relations?
I have a natural rapport with people.

*Coughs* Obviously. What made you decide to work for Civitas?
Why wouldn't I want to work for them? They're the largest technology company in the Imperial City, and the fifth fastest growing company in the world. The opportunities are limitless. Civitas prides itself on it's 'natural' ethos, and it's sense of community, which we endeavour to bring to all our products. In the last year alone, Civitas -

Alright, we get it. What do you make of all this trouble that Civitas is in at the moment?
[Sniffs] Civitas isn't in trouble, thank you very much. This is just a slight blip in our otherwise perfect record of bringing consumers the technology they want. The people speak, and we listen -

[Interrupting] Are you listening to what this 'Hacker' is saying? He thinks Civitas should be shut down, for good.
Forgive me if I don't take the word of a disillusioned man seriously. So one person doesn't like what we do, so what? If he doesn't like the services we provide, he's free to move elsewhere. Civitas isn't going to pay attention to the ravings of one man.

Right...and you think that's a sensible view to have?
Oh come on, how much damage can one man do? Civitas owns or has shares in roughly half of all the businesses in the Imperial City. He can't take us down that easily. Are you going to ask me any proper questions, or can I go? I've got a very busy schedule, you know.

We're almost done. What do you like to do on a weekend or on your time off from running a global corporation?
I don't understand the question.

Holidays! What do you do on your HOLIDAYS?
[thinks for a minute] I usually go into the office to make sure everything is running smoothly without me, or to catch up with a few little bits that I didn't get finished the previous day. Then while I'm there, I might try to schedule in a meeting or two, depending on if the other directors or managers are in, or visit the Research & Development department. By the time I've done all that, it's usually around 7pm, so I'll have some dinner then maybe work from home before going to bed.

[Pause] Okay...moving on...what items are on your bedside table right now?
Why on earth would you want to know that?

It's just a bit of - you know what, never mind. Do you have any secrets?
Is this a joke? Are you actually a real journalist? Even I did have anything to hide, which I don't, why would I share that highly personal information with you?

Let's make this our last question - Skye, what's your biggest fear?
That Civitas goes bankrupt, or ceases to be a company. Or I get fired.

Erm, that's great! Thanks for talking to us today, Skye! Have you enjoyed your time on my blog?
It's been an experience to say the least. No, don't get up, I'll see myself out.

So that's it! Thanks for tuning in to Skye's interview - I hope you enjoyed it!

If you fancy checking out any more of Skye's world, you can view a description of Synthetica on my blog. You can also download Synthetica from:

Amazon
Smashwords

Tomorrow on my blog, we'll be finding out more about another character from Synthetica, Dalla Goddard! See you tomorrow!

Synthetica Book Tour Announcement!

So I have some exciting news to share with you all...I'm pleased to announce that in July I'm going on a blog tour for Synthetica!

I'm super excited! This is my first ever blog tour, so I'm just hoping and praying that it all goes okay and that people actually WANT to host me/my book on their blogs. The tour will run from 6th - 17th July, so it'll be a busy two weeks, but I can't wait to throw myself into it.

I know that I'm doing this the wrong way round, and I probably should have done a book tour when I released the book, instead of doing a book blitz, but indie publishing is still a huge learning curve for me and I'm happy with the way everything has turned out :).

If you are interested in taking part in the tour (which, naturally, I know you all are ;)), you can sign up for the blog tour here. The tour will be a mix of guest posts and interviews, and I'll also be providing free copies of the book for you to review - what's not to love?? If you want any more info, feel free to email me at: rachelsramblingsblog[at]gmail.com

Anyway, that's my exciting news for the day! Hope you're all having a great week (and if not, it's still Friday tomorrow - woohoo!) - looking forward to seeing you all on the tour :)!

Muse Party Blogfest!

I know I'm a little late to the party (I'm just going to tell myself I'm fashionably late instead of actually late), but today is the lovely Sarah Foster's fourth blog anniversary, and in celebration, she's hosting a Muse Party blogfest! So pop open the champagne, grab your muse, and come join us!

Let's get this partttayyyy started!

Who is your muse (or character)? Tell us a little bit about him/her and why you brought them.

I decided to bring along Anais, my main character from my book Synthetica. I ummed and ahhed over who to bring, but to be honest, Anais is the whole reason I actually managed to finish writing a book, so I reckon she counts as my muse too. She's feisty, unafraid to say what she's really thinking, super cool (like, who doesn't want candy floss pink hair??) and basically the polar opposite of me. I think that's why I like her so much - I love making friends with quiet people like myself, but you can't deny that loud people have a certain energy that draws you to them, especially when they're genuinely nice people as well - Anais definitely has that spark.

What are you guys wearing? Dressing up or keeping it casual?

Oh man, me and Anais agree on one thing and that's the comfier, the better. I'm in leggings and a casual day dress, while Anais is wearing skinny jeans, t-shirt and her favourite red leather jacket (which she happened to steal from my real life wardrobe).

It's a potluck! Did you bring something yummy?

I love baking so I brought some cupcakes and some traditional English scones with jam and clotted cream! Anais brought her favourite ice-cream (salted caramel) and a big bag of crisps. I hope that's enough? Is it enough? I don't know! I always freak out over these things...

Open bar! What are you both drinking (booze or otherwise)?

A strawberry daiquiri for me, please! And anything with a kick for Anais - a rum and coke for now, but I have a feeling she'll try and sneak in a cocktail or two later. Her and Dalla (her OTHER best friend - and also, alas, imaginary) do love their fruity cocktails.

Wallflowers or social butterflies?

I'm definitely the awkward wallflower - Anais is somewhere between the two. She's happy to make conversation if she's in the right mood (i.e. drunk or with Dalla), but despite appearances, she can be rather shy at times. Also, if she's hungry, steer well clear - she's not friendly when she's hungry (she inherited that from me too - whoops). But as this is an awesome party with lots of food, she's pretty content and happy to chatter away :).

What song(s) will you and your muse sing for karaoke?

There is no way on this earth you will ever get me to do karaoke. Sorry! But Anais should be up for it, after a couple of rum and cokes. I tell you what - bring out the cheesy tunes, and I MAY consider participating ;). Anais (*cough* me *cough*) loves anything from the eighties and nineties, so if you've got the Spice Girls, Bryan Adams, Five, Backstreet Boys, Billy Idol etc...we're in!

What's your favorite party game?

Monopoly. I'm pretty old-school. Anais likes it too - YES YOU DO, ANAIS, DON'T LOOK AT ME LIKE THAT - ahem, as I was saying, WE like any type of board game ;)

Which one of you is more likely to end up dancing on a table top?

I did that once in Zante, on my one and only girl's holiday, and I'd like to keep it that way. Anais, however, would probably be all over this, especially after a cocktail or three.

Has your muse been a good date and would you ever hang out with them again?

Anais has been a great date! I always love hanging out with Anais - makes me feel a bit sad for all the crap I'm about to put her through in books 2 and 3, but hey, at least she'll have this one last good night to remember...what's that? No, Anais, I didn't say anything....mwahahaha.....

Thanks so much to Sarah for hosting this awesome event! I've had such a blast at this party, and I hope you have too :)!

X is for...Xander

Tonight's blog post is brought to you by the letter 'X'!

I've mentioned my book a couple of times during this challenge, but today, I thought this letter would be the perfect opportunity to introduce you to one of the characters in my novel - Xander.

I've tried to find a picture that best sums him up, but to be honest, purple haired/eyed men are pretty thin on the ground (thanks for nothing google...) - so these pictures are the best I can come up with:

Xander doesn't have long emo hair though - his hair is actually quite short. Next time I do this challenge/a post on Xander, I'll definitely ask a few of my more arty friends to draw a proper picture of him for you.

Anyway, moving on from the aesthetics, Xander is a pretty cool guy. He's Anais' boyfriend and boy, does he have a lot of running around to do when it comes to her! The thing that I like most about Xander is that he allows Anais to grow and be her own person, without trying to impose his views or beliefs on her. He supports her decisions, even when he doesn't totally agree with them. He's not possessive, he doesn't mind if she wants to do her own thing and they don't declare their love for each other after three days - they both realise that they're young, and they're having fun.

Xander has a pretty sarcastic sense of humour, which is great because Anais is equally as snarky (if not more so). He's loyal almost to a fault, and he has strong opinions on what's right and wrong. In fact, he struggles with the concept of the world not being simply black or white - if it were up to him, every choice would either be right or wrong.

Which brings me onto his role in the second book. To be honest, I've been struggling lately with what to do with Xander. He's such a sweet, caring guy and I love that he's always got Anais' back, but here's the thing...nice guys aren't that interesting to read about. I feel like he needs something 'more' to definite him, other than being Anais' boyfriend who also just happens to be good with computers.

The rest of the Synthetica series is going to be dark. I can feel it in my bones. There's no place in these books for a nice guy who's happy to let someone else take the lead. Xander is going to have to grow as a character, and fast. I already have one major plot planned out for him - at first, it absolutely broke my heart but the idea just wouldn't go away, and now I can't wait to get started and write it. Let's just say that after the next book, Xander's perception of right and wrong is going to shift in a major way ;).

Oh, and I think I'm totally going to use the below picture as my inspiration for Xander's motives in the next book. I love Xander and everything, but like I said, I'm looking forward to pushing him (and me) out of his comfort zone, and exploring his dark side:

Kinda cool, don't cha think ;)?

S is for...Synthetica

Today's A to Z blog challenge letter is brought to you by the letter S!

Today I thought I'd share an excerpt from Synthetica with you. If you're new to my blog, Synthetica is my debut YA sci-fi novel. Below is the blurb of the novel, for those of you who are new:

"Seventeen-year-old Anais Finch lives in a world where everyone is born beautiful, where every dream is a possibility - and where their every move and every piece of personal information is recorded by an ID picochip inserted behind their right ear. When technology giant, Civitas, finally announces the launch of their highly anticipated Scholarly Learning Programs, which allow people to download and learn any subject instantly, Anais can hardly wait.

But not everyone is pleased with society's progress, and not everyone wants to fit in. When Anais witnesses a brutal murder on an innocent citizen and is implicated in the crime, she becomes determined to uncover the truth, especially when others like it begin to occur all over the city. But it may already be too late for Anais to stop the man who calls himself 'the Hacker' before he commits his most appalling crime yet."

Today's excerpt comes from one of my favourite parts of the book - the Hacker, not content with the way one of underworld contacts has been doing business, finally decides to show his true colours. I've always felt that this is a kind of turning point in the book; we already know the Hacker is unhinged, based on his past actions, but it's only in this scene that we begin to realise that he'll stop at nothing to get what he wants. What makes him so dangerous if that it doesn't matter if you're on his side or not; if he believes you're standing in his way, it's pretty much the end of the line.

Enjoy the excerpt!

"It was only polite, after all, that one informed someone when their services were no longer required.
So it was completely beyond him why Denzel was on his knees, begging and crying. It didn't evoke any sympathy in him; if anything it simply made him more contemptuous.
Or maybe it had something to do with the knife in his hand. Every time Denzel glanced at it, he burst into renewed sobs.
P-please, just give me a chance, give me a chance. You'll have your money from the deal, I wasn't keeping from you, I swear, I swear. An' I sold six more of those chips today and I told 'em that if they had any friends, to send them my way. Word's getting out – I just need a little more time. Just a bit longer. Please, please...” Denzel seemed inconsolable as he dissolved into tears.
His brow creased as he tried to imagine what was going through this pitiful man's head. And then he decided he didn't particularly care.
Get. Up.”
His voice was soft, but he still saw Denzel flinch at the hoarseness of it, at how wrong it sounded. He was used to people recoiling at his voice. He didn't care so long as they still listened to what he had to say. Denzel gave a loud sniff and forced himself to his feet.
He took a step towards Denzel, and Denzel cowered back.
You can keep the money.”
Denzel looked as though he couldn't believe his ears.
W-what?”
This was never about the money. I have no use for it. Keep it.”
Relief washed over Denzel's face and he began to gush in his relief.
Thank you, thank you, I -”
Why are you thanking me?”
Denzel stopped. His gaze kept flicking back to the knife.
I am running out of time. And patience. You told me you could sell. Each and every one. Of those programs within a week. You have not. Lived up to my expectations. You have failed me.”
Denzel remained silent, stealing terrified glances between the knife and the masked face in front of him.
I have no use for failures.”
He lifted up the knife and Denzel squealed, stumbling backwards and falling onto the floor.
No – no! Please! I can still help you! Those programs – they're amazing, I ain't never seen a copy that good before. They're just like the real thing would be. I can sell them, I swear, I swear!”
He paused.
You really. Think they're. That good?” His voice was still as soft as he could make it.
Denzel nodded furiously.
They're real good. They'd pass any test, honest.” Denzel's voice was almost a squeak in his terror.
He looked down at Denzel grovelling on the floor. He was almost tempted to tell Denzel what his programs actually did – how they were so much more than anything Civitas could ever dream of. But then he decided it would be much more fun to show him.

Denzel,” his hoarse voice was quiet but the cruel, amused undertone was unmistakable. “Would you like me show you exactly how my programs work?”"

Hope you liked it!

If you did, make sure you check out Synthetica on Amazon and Goodreads :).

Happy Wednesday everyone!

Happy Synthetica Release Day!!

IT'S HERE! IT'S HERE! IT'S FINALLY HERE!!

I still can't believe it! Synthetica goes on sale on Amazon today!! Ahh!!

As you can tell from my IWSG post, I'm still freaking out about this - I've been in a constant state of nervousness since about 7pm last night and I don't think it's doing my heart or mind any good.

So today I've decided to get out of the house. If I stay in, I know I'm just going to drive myself crazy, refreshing my Amazon dashboard every 5 minutes, crying when everyone in the whole world doesn't immediately buy a copy*, and generally driving myself insane. I've made plans with one of my best friends to go out for afternoon tea to celebrate Synthetica's release and I can't wait - not just because I'm celebrating the release of my first book, but also because I haven't seen her since Christmas and I'm looking forward to having a proper girly catch-up.

So, I'm off now; I'm going to go and walk the dog, read, catch up on wedding stuff, get ready for my afternoon out, and generally try not to freak out anymore than I already am. I'll be back later to check out all the awesome A to Z Blog Challenge posts, but until then...have a great day, folks!

Oh, and if you DO fancy checking it out, you can find my book on Amazon, or on Goodreads :). Happy Wednesday!

*But at least I can console myself in the fact that my mum has promised to buy a copy, even if no one else does ;)

Why I wrote a book.

Synthetica is nearly here.

Tomorrow, I will finally be releasing my baby into the wild for it to fend for itself. I'll still be here if it needs to be fed, or comforted or if it wants to come home for a little while, but really, it's time it stood on it's own two legs.

There's not really much else I can say. I've freaked out about the launch, I've put up a little teaser from the book, I've posted up my writing playlist, I've told you about the inspiration behind the book, and I've revealed my book cover.

There is really only one last thing I wanted to share with you all, and that's the reason why I finally got my act together and wrote a book, instead of just sitting here still daydreaming about it.

The reason is my state of mind.

You've probably seen me mention passing references to my mental health and my anxiety in this blog. The time is coming soon, I think, when I'll let you know the whole horrible story behind it, but as I'm still trying to wrap my head around my book launch and get ready for the A to Z blogging challenge, that day is not today. All you need to know is that a few years ago in my second year of uni, I suffered a panic attack which led to a nervous breakdown (which is a tad ironic because at the time, I was having the best time of my life). The lingering effect of this, is that to this day I still suffer from high anxiety - it's nowhere near as bad as it used to be, but it's definitely still there and it gets so much worse if I'm tired. And I also have a horrible suspicion that it's led to a few episodes of depression, though, as I'll explain later, I don't trust going to the doctors to get it officially diagnosed.

Anyway, back then, I didn't know what I was dealing with. Mental health was never a topic that was discussed in school, which led me to believe I was indeed going mad. It took me a long, long time to come to the realisation that I wasn't mad - I was just human.

But during my darkest days, I couldn't bring myself to do anything. I didn't want to meet up with any of my friends, I didn't want to talk to my family, I didn't want to go outside. I just wanted to curl up into a ball and cry. Which I did. A lot.

I don't recall when the turning point came, but I do know it took me at least two years to get back to anything resembling normal. But I lost such a big portion of my life, that it made me realise something - I'm not willing to wait around anymore. I'm done with being helpless. I'm done with thinking that I'm a failure and that I have no control over my future or my life. Because I do. I'm the one that's in control of my life, not my anxiety.

It's taken a couple of false starts, and writing novels which came to a sudden dead end because the plot wasn't going anywhere, but guess what? I did it. Through all my securities, and my anxiety and my black periods where I didn't want to communicate with anyone, I did it. I wrote a book. And now I know that I can do it again. And again. And again. As many times as I like. Or not, if I choose not to write anymore. The point is, it's up to me.

I often raise an eyebrow when I see people saying' oh, I wrote my book for me, not for anyone else to read' but y'know what? I did write Synthetica for myself. I wrote Synthetica to show myself that I am capable of doing something with my life, that I'm more than capable of following my dreams and making my dreams a reality. All I have to do is to keep working at it, and keep writing.

I will never let my mental health define me. I will never let it restrict the choices I have in my life, or make me think that I'm worthless, or that all this has been for nothing. Because at the end of the day, whether you choose to read Synthetica or not (although I sincerely hope you will), I wrote this book for me. And I finished writing it for me.

And I'm damn proud of that.

Synthetica - Cover Reveal!!

So the day is finally here...I can finally get rid of that horrible greyish/green box on my Goodreads page and jazz up my soon-to-be 'Books' page on my blog. Why? Because today is the day I CAN FINALLY REVEAL THE COVER FOR SYNTHETICA!!

I'm so so excited!! I really, really hope you guys like it!

Before I get down to it, I just wanted to share with you a little story behind the cover, and why it means so much to me.

Basically, back in January this year, I was slogging through my rewrites of Synthetica, still dreaming about getting published one day but not really doing much about it and going through one of the worst bouts of anxiety I've had in a long long time. I couldn't seem to pull myself out of it. Everything just seemed dull and pointless.

But then, one night, the Engineer started asking me questions about my book. The conversation went a little like this:

Engineer (out of the blue): "What kind of mask does your villain wear?"
Me: "Think about the guy from Captain America: The Winter Solider, and you've got your man. Why?"
Engineer (super sly): "No reason..."
Me: "TELL ME!"
Engineer: "No." *clams up and refuses to speak to me about it again*

That conversation hasn't been stylised at all. Well, maybe a little, but still - he did ask me out of the blue about my villain's mask and when I pressed him, he did refuse to tell me.

A week or so later, while he was in China on a business trip, the Engineer sent me an email. Attached was a mock-up of a cover for Synthetica. Without me knowing, he'd got a designer he works with to design a cover for me. I was in shock and so thrilled at the same time - when I asked him why he'd done it, you know what the Engineer said to me? He said he wanted me to have something to look forward to. He did it to pull me out of myself and back into the real world. I still can't believe that I've managed to find someone that selfless, who knew I was going through a rough time and decided to help me out of it by encouraging me to never give up on my dreams. I wouldn't be self-publishing my book today, if it wasn't for him.

If I'm 100% honest, that first cover wasn't what I was imagining when I thought about it in my endless daydreams, but I think that's a good thing. I think that together, me and my designer have come up with an even stronger design than the one I originally envisioned.

It's not pretty like the other YA book covers you tend to see. But y'know what? I don't care. I'm not a frilly, pretty pink person. Neither is my book. Both me and my book are dark and straight to the point. And in this context, I think the cover for Synthetica couldn't have been any better.

It's bold. It's simple. It's striking. It's everything I wanted.

And here it is:

Synthetica...it's coming. 1st April 2015.

The backbone of the story...

Today, I'm going to be talking a little bit about the background to Synthetica.

There are a lot of  dystopian/sci-fi/apocalyptic YA books out there which seem to have one central theme: all of the protagonists are fighting to overthrow some kind of government regime. I know that not all YA books within these genres contain this theme - there are some that don't, and then there are some which do, but they deal with it a lot better than others.

For whatever reason, the main character is often 'chosen' in some way to lead the resistance against this oppressive power. Which they often manage to do against impossible odds, without getting all sweaty and falling in love with a cookie cutter, I mean, handsome, devil-may-care male lead in the process.

I have no problem with this. The Hunger Games and Divergent count among my favourite YA books of all time (if I'm completely honest, I think Divergent may actually be my favourite, full stop). I love to read (and write) YA, simply because it allows me to escape reality into these fantastic worlds, where the protagonists fight against all odds to do what they believe to be right. It's great, and I love, love, love it.

But...

I can't lie. My patience is starting to wear slightly. I can deal with oddly constructed love triangles. I can deal with whiny heroines/heros. What I can't deal with any more is the flimsy premise that some of these main characters have for miraculously meeting the head of this so-called totalitarian government and then either a) being forced to work for them or b) being recruited to work against them.

When I read, I want to be sucked into the character's world and feel what they're feeling, and see what they're seeing. The world can be as fantastical as you like - talking dragons? Shape shifting puppies? Twenty feet tall cupcake monsters? - I genuinely don't care, so long as the author can draw me into this crazy world and make me believe it could be true.
But readers can tell when something is so obviously done for convenience - such as the MC randomly meeting the President, or the King or Queen, or whoever, just so they can fight them later down the line. It jars. It takes you out of the novel's world, and makes you think, 'hang on, what just happened??' Once this thought happens, it's very hard (for me at least) to get back into the story, because I finally myself gradually getting more and more annoyed at the characters, and the ease at which they overcome obstacles or manage to overthrow an entire government.

So I knew from the start that Synthetica was never going to be about bringing down a government regime.

There is a reason why I love Lord of the Rings. And Harry Potter. And Batman. And any Marvel comic/film. Each and every one of the character's battles was personal. The reader could connect with what the character was doing, and why. We get to see their inner turmoil, see what makes them tick, see them agonise over their choices, and - ultimately - defeat a villain.

And that, right there, is why I wrote Synthetica the way I did. I wanted Anais' battles to be personal. I want readers to love her when she gets it right, and hate her when she gets it wrong. I want people to like her and dislike her in equal measure. Sometimes, I dislike her and the choices she makes, but ultimately, I still want her to succeed against her own enemy - the Hacker. The reason I loved writing Synthetica so much is because I felt I had so much more scope with the story by making Anais' enemy a real person. Firstly, how do they even become enemies? How does the Hacker make his plans personal to her? Why does she need to stop him? How will this obsession (on both their parts) affect their relationships with other people?

I haven't answered all of these questions in this book. But I definitely kept them in mind while writing Synthetica; and the second book in the series is going to focus on that final question in particular.

I just hope you all enjoy reading about Anais' world as much as I enjoyed writing it :).

Inspiration Station...

In honour of Synthetica being released next month (three weeks to go, people...I think I'm going to throw up from nerves...), I thought I'd share with you all the inspiration behind the novel.

Originally when I thought of this post, I remembered a few bits and pieces from conversations I'd had with the Engineer, and the original scene from the Matrix that inspired me to jot down the idea for Synthetica. But then one day last week, I was looking back through the folder I have on my laptop which contains all of my work for the book. It has pages of random notes, a spreadsheet containing the rough layout of the book's scenes, a detailed synopsis, random photos of my beat sheet and cake I posted on Twitter, first drafts, second drafts (all saved in different formats, depending on the computer I was using at the time) and another subfolder for my final drafts.

I decided to have a nosy at my original 'Ideas and Notes' file, just to see what I'd come up with and to see if I could work any of it into this blog post - and I was genuinely shocked.

Whenever I hear about other writers saying that their novel went on a 'journey' and it didn't end up how they imagined etc etc, there is always a part of me that is a tiny bit sceptical. 'But surely,' I cry, 'your book can't have been THAT much of a learning curve? You had the idea for it, surely it's still the same book??'

My god, have I been wrong.

You want to see a snippet of my original notes and ideas for Synthetica? Here it is:

(The original document is six pages long by the way, this isn't everything)

It's only looking back over these notes now, that I can fully appreciate how far my novel has come. I've even cringed slightly reading them back - in them, I can see snippets I've 'borrowed' from other YA books that I'd recently read, or themes in other YA books which I thought I had to have in mine in order for it to be a success.

I am so grateful that my novel outgrew these notes, and turned into something totally different. I can remember having one conversation with the Engineer while we were out walking in the Lake District - I was telling him my ideas for this novel, and we were throwing around ideas of the rich buying programs they could download directly into their brains, and thinking what the less well-off citizens of the city think/do in this situation. What if the rich kept the programs from the poor? Why would they do this? What would the poor do to retaliate?

But even back then, when I got home and wrote up those notes from our walk, I wasn't really feeling it. I don't mind reading books about characters who overthrow oppressive regimes, but let's face it - it's been done to death in YA. I knew what I didn't want from my book - I only had to figure out what I did want.

I don't remember exactly where the idea for the Hacker came from, but I have a feeling it was while I was watching Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Wherever the idea came from, as soon as I thought about him, that's when I knew - my book wasn't going to be about an evil government, or a regime - Synthetica was going to be about the fight between Anais and the Hacker, and the consequences of both their actions. To me, having an actual villain in a novel or a film makes the whole story more...relatable. It's a strange concept, I know, but I'll be explaining more about my thoughts on this in an upcoming blog post.

Anyway, so that's a small snapshot into the inspiration that Synthetica came from. I guess it just goes to show that you can find inspiration from anywhere and everywhere, if you're willing to look for it.

Until next time! Happy Wednesday, everyone!
